The Asheville Regional Airport Authority’s Marketing and Public Relations Department (MPRD) provides local and national news media organizations and their working reporters and crews, with information to help communicate to the traveling public. All media inquiries should be directed and coordinated through the MPRD. Inquiries will be answered in the order they were received. Media should not call the Public Safety Department, as staff is busy with the safe management of AVL facilities. The Marketing and Public Relations Department will provide the appropriate spokesperson to address the particular topic of the interview.

Access to Public Areas
The media is welcome in public areas including: the terminal, lobby, hallways, and baggage claim. Public areas also include parking lots, and roadways. Media representatives are required to display press identification and identify themselves to anyone they interview, photograph, or film.
The media should not block, impede or restrict passenger movement, including entrances and exits. When conducting interviews, the media must not interfere with airport or airline operations.
Photography or videography of the equipment and personnel at the security checkpoints is prohibited. When enhanced security procedures are mandated by either the FAA or TSA, there may be certain additional restrictions on media access. Those restrictions will remain in effect until modified by the issuing agency.
Media may be denied access to areas leased by the airlines and other tenants, including ticket counters, stores, private offices and restaurants.
Inquiries regarding criminal activity that may occur on Airport property should be directed to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
Airfield Access
Requests for filming in the aircraft operation areas will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Prior notification and scheduling is essential. Requests for access will be accommodated to the extent manpower, operational considerations and safety permit. In the event of an emergency situation or other events that requires the full attention of Authority staff, a prearranged escort may be cancelled.
Parking and Live Shots
Media personnel may park vehicles in the 30-minute parking spaces provided in the Authority staff parking lots or in long-term parking. Media trucks providing a live shot or satellite feed must coordinate parking with MPRD in all other areas.
Vehicles on airport roadways must be attended at all times. Unattended vehicles will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. AVL personnel, time permitting, will validate the parking claim check for media who park in AVL customer parking lots. Validated parking stubs allow the holder to exit AVL parking lots free of charge.
Emergencies
The primary responsibilities of AVL staff members are safe and orderly airport operations. During an emergency situation, the MPRD will respond to the media as quickly as possible. Media briefings may be scheduled and announced for specified briefing areas. During an emergency situation on airport property, AVL staff will provide the following information:
-
Runway, ramp, de-icing pad, terminal, cargo building, parking lot, concourse or what has been affected
-
General description of the incident. (The cause of an aircraft incident is released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the airline involved after an investigation has been conducted. Until then, no agency will speculate about the cause of the incident
