The Department of Public Safety (DPS) at the Asheville Regional Airport provides 24-hour police, aircraft rescue fire fighting, and emergency medical services to all airport users.
DPS officers are certified through the NC Justice and Trainings Commission as police officers and are cross-trained in aircraft fire rescue. There is at least one emergency medical technician on each shift for 24-hour coverage and all DPS officers are First aid, CPR, and defibrillator certified. Each DPS officer is proud to present an image of readiness to assist and uphold the values of service to our community and service to our fellow man.
With the Airport Police being a state certified agency, they provide all law enforcement functions for the airport along with anti-hijack and anti-terrorism responsibilities. DPS officers perform routine and emergency police functions such as foot and vehicle patrol, field investigations, report writing, criminal arrests, traffic control, accident and criminal investigations, anti-drug smuggling operations, crime prevention activities, dignitary protection services, intelligence gathering, and surveillance work.
The Airport Police work in cooperation with a number of local, state and federal agencies including the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, US Marshall’s Service, US Secret Service, US Immigrations & Customs Enforcement, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The NC Crime Control & Public Safety, as well as all Western North Carolina law enforcement agencies, are the other law enforcement partners with which the Airport Police maintain a close working relationship.
Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting services are maintained at an Index B level with equipment and personnel 24-hours a day, seven days a week. ARFF apparatus include two 1500 gallon water/AFFF foam trucks and a quick response twin agent 500 gallon water/AFFF foam, 450 pound dry chemical truck. DPS officers maintain their FAA Part 139 ARFF training annually, conduct a multi- agency tabletop disaster drill each year, a full- scale disaster drill every three years, and undergo an annual FAA inspection of training records, response time, and apparatus readiness. Buncombe County Fire Station 24 is proud of their relationship with all their mutual aid departments. A special thanks to the Skyland, Fletcher, and Asheville Fire Departments for their continued support.
The Department of Public Safety is a public- service oriented organization with the objective of providing a safe and orderly environment for the traveling public, visitors, and employees at the airport
